The best snack tray for the couch, tested

What a couch snack tray is for

Most snack trays are designed for picnics, breakfast in bed, or coffee tables. A couch snack tray is a different problem. It has to sit on an armrest, hold a snack bowl plus a drink plus a remote, and not slide when you reach for a chip.

Almost no product is marketed for exactly this. Most couch armrest trays only have a cup well. Most snack trays only have a flat surface. The right shape combines both, plus enough weight to stay put.

What we tested

  1. Bamboo lap tray on the armrest. Too big to sit cleanly. Tipped when reached for.
  2. Felt-and-wood snack tray. Held the bowl. Felt absorbed salsa. Permanent stain within one movie.
  3. Plastic clip-on snack tray. Held the bowl. Slid when the cushion shifted. Bowl fell onto the floor.
  4. Heavy silicone armrest tray with a cup well and flat area. Held the bowl, the drink, and the remote. Stayed put through three movies.

What size matters

A snack bowl is usually 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Most armrest trays are 5 to 7 inches wide. The bowl overhangs, which makes the whole setup tippy. Look for an armrest tray that is at least 8 inches wide if you want to use it for snacks.

The Sofa Sidekick is 11 inches wide. A standard snack bowl sits flat with about an inch of clearance on each side. The cup well takes the drink. The remote sits next to the bowl. Everything stays put.

Materials that work for snacks

  • Silicone. Wipes clean. Does not absorb. Standard for any food-contact use.
  • Solid wood with no felt. Wipes clean if you stay on top of it. Will stain over time with anything tomato-based.
  • Stainless steel. Wipes clean. Cold to the touch. Not couch-friendly aesthetically.

Materials to skip

  • Felt. Absorbs everything. Becomes permanent stain within weeks.
  • Fabric-lined plastic. Same problem as felt.
  • Untreated softwood. Stains on contact with oily snacks.

The popcorn rule

Popcorn is the gold standard for testing a snack tray. If the tray can handle a bowl of buttery popcorn for two hours without tipping, sliding, or absorbing, it can handle anything you will put on a couch.

We use the Sofa Sidekick for popcorn at least twice a week. The silicone wipes clean of butter with a damp cloth. The cup well takes the drink. The remote sits next to the bowl. The tray has not moved in eighteen months of weekly use.

Frequently asked questions

Can a couch tray hold a full meal?

Most can hold a single bowl or plate, plus a drink. For a full meal with multiple dishes, a lap tray works better. The couch tray is for snacks and drinks, not dinner.

Will a silicone tray absorb popcorn butter?

No. Silicone is non-absorbent and oleophobic. Butter wipes off with a damp cloth and leaves no stain.

What is the right size for a couch snack tray?

At least 8 inches wide to fit a standard snack bowl with clearance. The Sofa Sidekick is 11 inches, which gives room for a bowl plus a drink plus a remote without crowding.
