Best sofa armrest trays for 2023 (and what to skip)

A top-down view comparing four different sofa armrest trays for size

What ‘best’ means in this category

‘Best’ for a sofa armrest tray is the one you stop noticing after a week. The cup does not tip. The tray does not slide. The remote stays in the tray. The leather does not show a mark. The cleaning takes 30 seconds.

By that definition, very few trays on the market in 2023 qualify. We have tested more than 20. About four meet all five criteria. The rest fail on at least one.

The five criteria

  1. Cup does not tip when the cushion shifts.
  2. Tray does not slide on the armrest.
  3. Remote and phone fit on the flat section.
  4. No mark on the couch after weeks of use.
  5. Cleans in 30 seconds with a damp cloth.

What we tested in 2023

  • Wooden tray with felt liner: failed on cleaning and on staining the felt.
  • Bamboo lap tray on the armrest: failed on tipping and on remote placement.
  • Plastic clip-on tray: failed on leather marking and on aesthetics.
  • Bean-bag tray with plastic cup well: failed on tipping when cushion shifted.
  • Heavy silicone tray, draped armrest design: passed all five.
  • Heavy silicone tray, sit-on-top design: passed four (failed on sliding on curved armrests).
  • Solid wood tray, rounded edges, no felt: passed three (failed on cleaning and on weight).

The category winners

Heavy silicone trays with a draped design are the winners in 2023. The Sofa Sidekick is one of them. There are two or three competitors in the same category. All of them share the same basic design: heavy, draped over the armrest, food-grade silicone, cup well plus flat tray.

Choose based on cup well size (does your cup fit?), color match (does it look like your couch?), and price. Most are in the $25-40 range.

What to skip

  • Anything under $20. The silicone is usually too thin, the weight too light, and the cup well too shallow.
  • Anything with clamps, clips, or rigid contact surfaces. These damage couches.
  • ‘Multifunctional’ trays that try to do too much. A tray that is also a charger and a phone stand usually fails at all three jobs.
  • Felt-lined trays. The felt absorbs every spill and becomes the problem.

Buying notes for 2023

If you are buying a sofa armrest tray right now, the short checklist:

  • Heavy silicone, food-grade certified.
  • Draped design that fits your armrest width (most products fit 4-9 inches).
  • Cup well at least 1.5 inches deep, sized for your typical cup.
  • Flat tray section big enough for a remote.
  • Color that disappears against your couch.

The category has matured. The right product exists. Spend $25-40, get the food-grade silicone version, and stop looking. The decision does not deserve more time than that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sofa armrest tray of 2023?

Any food-grade heavy silicone tray with a draped design and a deep cup well will perform well. The Sofa Sidekick is the one we make and use. There are two or three competitors in the same category that are also acceptable.

How much should I spend on a sofa armrest tray?

$25 to $40. Below $20, the silicone is usually too thin and the weight too light. Above $40, you are paying for branding without functional improvement.

Is silicone the only good material?

Silicone is the only material that meets all five criteria (no tipping, no sliding, no marking, easy cleaning, real cup well). Wood and metal can each meet some of them. Silicone meets all five.
